Freiheitsplatz Hanau, 2003 - 2004

The functional and creative rearrangement and partial development of the "Freiheits" Plaza was the assignment of the design competition. This was to include the bordering urban spaces and the upgrading of the northeastern core city. The plaza is to simultaneously be suitable for events and performances. The required parking spaces for the area are to be incorporated into an up to three storey high underground parking garage. Access and approach roads are to be planned. Volker Götte Planungsgesellschaft mbH, Ulrike Brandi - lighting planner and AS&P - Albert Speer & Partner developed the second-placing contribution. This design envisioned the integration of the former esplanade and the parade ground to an urban city space. In order to support this idea, the accompanied development, the "Am Freiheitsplatz" road on the northern corner of the plaza, was proposed. Thereby, the Nordstraße and the bordering historic town quarter were upgraded and incorporated into the master plan. The development, with four entire floors and set-back loft, is to scale and enables multifaceted urban uses and the creation of an urban character. Shops, cafes and bistros are located on the 1st floor while apartments and offices are envisioned for the 2nd and 3rd floors. The 4th and 5th floors are to be furnished with west-facing apartments. Therefore, high quality apartments and lofts exist primarily with a view of the "Caree vert".
