Office Building Ostplatz, Leipzig, 1992 - 1994

The competition winning design for the Ostplatz office and retail complex was among the first approved projects built in the former GDR to comply with standard zoning regulations. The new complex is part of the restructuring of the surrounding area around Prager Strasse, a main, treelined boulevard in Leipzig which connects the center of the city to the trade fairground. Modern architectural elements are arranged in clear geometric forms complementing the historic buildings of the neighbourhood. The ground level arcades provide for commercial space, shops and restaurants. Since it was an important component of the design to provide for public spaces, the ground floor facilities can be entered from the street side as well as from a roofed atrium that is stretched between two building wings. The stories above ground level house office units of varying sizes between 300 and 500 sqm.
