Campus Bundesstraße University of Hamburg, 2011

For the modernization and expansion of the university in the Elmsbüttel district, the Hanseatic City of Hamburg staged an interdisciplinary Urban Planning, Construction, and Technical Building Planning competition for the first construction stage involving the Earth Sciences and Computer Science premises, and the main infrastructure. The urban development concept drawn up by AS&P, with Schweger Architects responsible for the building design, envisages \"healing\" the unsatisfactory urban development of the past decades by gradually replacing the existing structure comprising continuous and stand-alone edifices, repairing ruptured blocks of buildings, and restoring historical routes. The Bundesstrasse and Von Melle Park campuses are the heart of the university and are linked by an overarching set of diagonal pathways. This diagonal extends between two new elevations, which, located either side of the main road, serve as landmarks that give the campus coherence across the latter. The blocks of buildings represent a legible reflection of the construction stages. For the expected duration of the work, at least ten years, the plans are nonetheless based as far as possible on the demolition and reconstruction stages stipulated, guaranteeing high urban quality during all construction stages.
